Ever wondered how pearls are made? Each one is as unique as the wearer, and each has an individual character. Some are bright, luminescent and lusterous, some are almost perfect spheres, whereas some are organic in shape so the right pearl is a highly personal choice. At Chibnalls Jewellers we have a huge range of pearls and years of experience so picking your perfect pearl can be made easy.

There are four main varieties of pearls; South Sea, Tahitian, Akoya and Freshwater. Each are destinctly different to each other and each posess unique characteristics so it is important to know the differences in order to choose the perfect pearl. Whilst picking your pearl you also need to consider five different points: lustre, size, flaws, shape and colour.


For thirty years our experienced staff at Chibnalls Jewellers have been making it easy for our customers by carefully hand picking our perfect pearls and turning into timelessly elegant and beautifully sophisticated pieces, as all pearls should be.
Australian South Sea Pearls
These are the highest quality and most luxurious pearls of all. It can take up to three years to produce a pearl of this quality and are usually white, pink or golden in colour, and range from 9 mm to 18 mm in diameter.
Black Tahitian Pearls
These pearls are a type of South Sea Pearl, but have the exotic dark colour unique to this type of pearl and can range from deep black to dark peacock green and aubergine.
Akoya Pearl
Slightly smaller in size, these pretty pink pearls range from 4 mm to 10 mm and are grown in salt water.
